Integrated techniques for targeted, lasting relief
Though often described as separate therapies, acupuncture and dry needling share more similarities than differences, especially when it comes to treating muscle tension and pain. What is commonly referred to as dry needling is, in many ways, a modern interpretation of traditional myofascial acupuncture or trigger point therapy.
This technique involves the insertion of a single, sterile acupuncture needle into a taut band of muscle, also known as a trigger point. The goal is to release built-up tension, improve mobility, and relieve pain at its source.
While physical therapists have only recently begun to incorporate dry needling into their practice, licensed acupuncturists receive extensive training in both classical Chinese medicine and modern biomedical anatomy. This dual perspective allows for a more informed, holistic approach to treatment.
At The Point, we use direct palpation to assess tissue quality and accurately locate trigger points, an essential step in effective treatment that gloved hands can often obscure. When performed by a trained acupuncturist, acupuncture and dry needling can be strategically combined to produce more precise, long-lasting results.

Yesterday was the first time I have ever gotten acupuncture as a treatment and as the old saying goes first impressions are lasting. Impressions the staff at the point acupuncture were wonderful. Ashley was very accommodating. She literally went out into the parking lot to make sure that I turned in at the right place because I was having trouble even finding it and the doctor once I was in the room made me feel very comfortable and I was in a headspace that would be ready.
I can’t share enough wonderful things about the people who work at this clinic as well as Dr. Claudia. I am an Air Force veteran who suffers from a lot of back pain and not only has she helped me manage that and find that Acupuncture has helped me tremendously, but also help with many other things as far as my overall health regarding taking care of myself. Dr. Claudia and her team care about you like family and I would drive anywhere to get seen by them.
I cannot thank Dr. Sandoval enough for the incredible care and expertise she has provided. Before seeing her, I had no relief for pain. I struggled with severe neck stiffness, spine and back pain, making everyday tasks daunting. Her thorough evaluations allow her to diagnose every inch of pain, making her treatment truly effective. Thanks to her treatment, I’ve regained mobility and energy. Several months in, I’m on the road to recovery and feeling better than ever. Dr. Sandoval is truly amazing!
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a chronic pain condition caused by the presence of trigger points tight, sensitive areas in muscles or fascia that can refer pain to other parts of the body. Unlike everyday muscle tightness, MPS-related discomfort is persistent, often worsens over time, and typically doesn’t respond to stretching, rest, or massage alone.
MPS frequently arises from:
These stressors contribute to the formation of trigger points, most commonly in areas prone to physical or postural strain. Research continues to explore the exact mechanisms behind MPS, but it is widely recognized as a significant source of both pain and restricted mobility.
